Trinity Fields
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (March, 1995)
Author: Bradford Morrow
Average review score:

A rare literary treat.
Over the last year I have visited Western New Mexico on numerous occasions, including many of the settings of Trinity Fields and its sequel, Ariel's Crossing. Morrow's description of the New Mexican countryside and its people is exquisite, allowing me to see that beautiful State with a fresh appreciation of its natural, historical, and spiritual beauty.

Morrow's treatise on the human affinity for and in the end the banality of war-particularly Vietnam-is worthy of another Pulitzer. The metaphorical power of the friendship of Kip and Brice is best understood as complementary alter egos, forces and instincts that exist side by side within many of us.

I read Ariel's Crossing prior to reading Trinity Fields. While I also loved the sequel, I recommend reading Trinity first, since Ariel builds on the characterizaions so carefully wrought in Trinity. Read them both for a great literary experience.

Best Book Since "Riverbrook"
Philip argues with Victor about his love for Chloe as Victor claims he's too young to know what love really is. When their argument heats up, Victor grounds him for having low grades and being distracted by Chloe. Stefano overhears Brandon pleading with Lexie to give Isaac to Hope where he belongs. Stefano first offers him money to keep quiet and then threatens him but Brandon isn't frightened which worries Lexie. When Stefano complains to Rolf about this trouble, Rolf decides to kill Brandon. Belle and Chloe look for Bo and Hope to tell them about what Belle saw at the river. Hearing the fire department found nothing after dragging the river again, Bo decides Hope's right that J.T. is still alive. This, folks, is the wonderful world of "Trinity Fields." Read it and learn the meaning of the word "enthralled." Here's how many tiny yet flamingly intense white dwarfs I give it: ****************************************************************************. Wow!

Morrow crafts a book that you can't stop reading.
Brad Morrow has a way with words ... He crafts them into exquisite sentences, paragraphs and mental pictures that are wonderfully refreshing. The story is compelling ... His Characters believable. I loved it! Great job, Brad!

The Art & Technique of Underwater Photography
Published in Hardcover by Fountain Pr Ltd (April, 1998)
Authors: Mark Webster and Grant Bradford
Average review score:

great!
i've taken a few pictures before ive gotten this book. but i loved the way it broke down everything and basically taught u from scratch. everything u need to know about underwater photography. when i got this book it was my bible for about a year i read it in and out multiple times and still use it today as a reference. i think the best part about this book is the pictures. and the fact that he tells u different techniques and shows how it ends up on the exposure. and how every single picture in the book (hundreds) was obtained, from shutter speed to strobe setting was also very helpful. lots of time underwater and film was used to make this book. i suggest this book to anyone who is even thinking of taking a camera below the surface. or someone who already has. because of this my photoalbum is stunning and better than i ever thought it could be.

All-in-one for beginning as well as advanced photographers.
As an amateur surface photographer, I truly enjoyed reading this book. It provides me comprehensive basic knowledge on the subject as well as more in-depth knowledge to build on down the road. The photos throughout the book greatly help convey the author's ideas and the readers to quickly grasp the concept. I recommend this book to anyone considering taking up underwater photography. Note: Since the book was written by a British author, at the beginning I was bit confused with the measuring system (meters instead of feet) and the currency (pounds instead of US dollars). To know the conversion rate at the start would be very helpful.

Beautifully illustrated book
With over 250 photographs and illustrations, each with a fully detailled description on strobe and apperture settings. If you own a housed camera, this book is a must.

The Healing Energy of Your Hands
Published in Paperback by Crossing Press (November, 1995)
Author: Michael Bradford
Average review score:

As good as it gets...
"The Healing Energy of Your Hands", in my experience, is perhaps the most complete "how- to" book of it's kind. It addresses, importantly, not only "techniques", intent and moral issues, but also what it takes personally to be a good and responsible healer.

I RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE who has an interest in energetic healing.

The Healing Energy of Your Hands
I am a Reiki Master and as such am always looking for books about healing and energy. This book has been a real treat for me. I found Michael Bradford to be an excellent author who is able to speak to each person through his words. This book is written in a down to earth manner that anyone can understand. I am using some of his techniques for healing already. I am so glad I found this book. :-)

Excellent Book!
Healing Energy of Your Hands is an excellent book. Covers beginning and advanced concepts, distance healing and more. Highly recommended.

Inside Cia's Private World: Declassified Articles from the Agency's Internal Journal, 1955-1992
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (August, 1995)
Author: H. Bradford Westerfield
Average review score:

No secrets, but a little window into how the agency operates
This Yale University Press publication is an insiders scorecard on how to collect information. Techniques for clandestine human intelligence gathering are reviewed in detail. The text even explores how internal CIA squabbling hurts U.S. intelligence gathering. The declassified articles from the agency's internal journal from 1955-1992 is mostly insider shop talk. My favorite chapter is VII, Counterespionage. Section eight of chapter three, psychology of treason is an ice-cold analysis.

A Fascinating Peek into the CIA's World
This series of essays shows CIA's thinking on a range of subjects that are eclectic and really interesting. Assessments of various forms of intelligence collection are included, trends in the agency's history, and many others. I especially found the chapter on the psychology of defectors and spies interesting and especially relevant. It's an older piece, but still current given the capture of Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames.

"Best of the Best" from CIA Insider Think Pieces
Brad, a respected scholar in his own right, was given unique access to all past publications of the CIA's internal journal, Studies in Intelligence, and has produced an absolutely lovely collection of the best thoughts inside CIA from 1955-1992, organized into sections for imagery intelligence collection, overt human intelligence collection, clandestine human intelligence collection, human intelligence and its consumers, the analysis function, analysis and its consumers, and counterespionage. I regard this book as an essential supplementary reading for teaching both students and practitioners.

Jackie Tales: The Magic of Creating Stories and the Art of Telling Them
Published in Hardcover by Avon (June, 1998)
Authors: Jackie Torrence, Peter Bradford, Michael Pateman, and Ossie Davis
Average review score:

Greatest stories ever
Ever since I was about three (I'm [age] now) I've listened to almost all her stories... my parents recorded them off the radio for me, and i usually listened to them when I went to bed. I still have "jack was born a lazy baby" going through my head. For the longest time, I had memorized the entire story "jack in the army", haints and all... This is probably the most influential part of my childhood, and when I get kids, I'll give them the same tapes I used to have.

Storytelling gem in words and photographs
Jackie Torrrence has rightly earned a reputation as the "First Lady of Storytelling." She has elevated the art of "porch style telling" to new heights, with her expressive facial and hand gestures, beautiful diction and direct approach to her listeners. Unfortunately, because of medical concerns she is not able to perform any longer, though she continues to work with apprentices in the art.

How fortunate, then, that we have this book of her favorite stories, with wonderful photographs on every page that come very close to capturing the essence of a "Jackie telling." Sprinkled liberally throughout are Jackie's tips for telling these stories, as well as her personal philosophy about the various types of stories included. Most inspiring, though, is her sharing of her personal story, of her positive outlook on life and the will to accept and work with whatever burdens we might face. This volume is highly recommended for lovers of story everywhere.

THANK YOU JACKIE!
Until a week ago I was ignorant of Jackie Torrence's existence. "I don't know how effective this book will be for someone who is unfamiliar with this wonderful lady" states an earlier review. After hearing just a snippet on NPR about the book, I rushed to get it, and have truly enjoyed it. Jackie has made me a storyteller! Parents, aunts, uncles, educators, sages, grandparents, and anyone who enjoys entertaining should open this book. Jackie provides traditional stories with cues and suggestions on how to bring the words alive. The book works. I'll never be Jackie, but my nephews love my new-found talent. The photographs are heartwarming.

Traveling the Purposeful Path
Published in Paperback by Booklocker.com (June, 2002)
Author: W. Bradford Swift
Average review score:

An excellent, important resource
In a world desperately in need of hope and healing, Brad Swift's "Traveling the Purposeful Path" serves as an excellent tool and resource for creating a life that is personally meaningful and outwardly contributive.

Swift's methods are simple yet powerful, straightforward and profound--and whether you are new to this exploration or have traveled a "purposeful path" for a while, you will find insights and exercises of great value within these pages.

Practical guide to purposeful living
I have experienced the Purpose Process in person with Brad Swift and through his website. This book is another opportunity to meet this heart-centered teacher and to learn a practical way to uncover your life purpose. Although it is filled with gems, it is worth reading just to become acquainted with what Swift calls your "inherited purpose." With this one new perspective you will begin to understand how old messages and beliefs sabotage your attempts to be happy, fulfilled and fully alive.

This is a must read!
Traveling the Purposeful Path is a life changing experience. It is simple and powerful. I have read so many books on how to find passion and fulfillment that my book shelves are full. Yet, my life didn't really change that much and I never really found the peace and fulfillment that I was looking for. Traveling the Purposeful Path helps you realize the gap of where you are starting from and where you want to be. You identify the self limiting beliefs that are ingrained in your being and learn to shift to a more purposeful place. A place where you show up every day as you truly are meant to be. This isn't a book to me....it is now a way I live my life. I am crystal clear on my life purpose and I spend everyday that I am given truly being and doing what God has planned for me.

Denali's West Buttress: A Climber's Guide to Mount McKinley's Classic Route
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (November, 1997)
Authors: Colby Coombs and Bradford Washburn
Average review score:

Simple and to the point
This book was easy to read and provides a great historical overview of the mountain, what equipment you need and a detailed step by step guide to the West Buttress route with Maps from Brad Washburn. Although I would say this book is merely a warm up in the research you need to do and understand to climb Denali. A very practical guide.

Denali's West Buttress: A Climber's Guide to Mount McKinley'
Required preparatory text for anyone planning the climb. Gives a clear understanding of the route and what is involved in attempting it. Written in concise, clear language by Denali authorities with emphasis on safety and sanitation. Of special interest is a chapter on women's concerns. Also, good reading for non-climbers wanting an inside view to what climbers experience enroute to the summit.

Enormously comprehensive; thoroughly practical.
A thoughtful compendium of useful knowledge: for the neophyte, as well as the experienced. Practical advice on "leave only your footsteps"; interesting historical background; lucid prose makes it an easy read

Happy Birthday, Addy!: A Springtime Story (American Girls Collection (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Pleasant Company Publications (September, 1994)
Authors: Luann Roberts Smith, Bradford Brown, Dahl Taylor, and Connie Rose Porter
Average review score:

Realistic, and yet gentle
This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. In this story, Addy makes a new friend in the form of M'dear, a kindly old African-American woman whose blind eyes see more than most. Sadly, as Addy learns more about her new life of freedom, she learns more about the racial discrimination that pervades the world around her. It's up to Addy, with M'dear's insights, to see the way forward in such a dark world.

The final chapter is a look at what it growing up was like for African-American children in the America of 1864. Once again, I must praise American Girls for producing such a wonderful book. This story sets out race relations in a no-nonsense way, but without recrimination-it is a true lesson in healing. My eleven-year-old daughter loved this book, with its realistic history and gentle lessons, and I loved it too!

Wonderful addition to children's litterature
This book continues Addy Walker's adventures after successfully escaping her plantation for freedom up North.

Addy continues to be amazed by the opportunities that are so much more broader than those on the old plantation, but also realizes that even "free" states have racial segregation and discrimination. She is no longer the property of slaveowners, but still cannot travel certain places or excercise privlleges that whites in Philadephia are able to use.

With her friend Sarah's encouragement, Addy picks out a birthday. While such an action might seem mundane by today's standards, Addy (like others during slavery) never had a day that was uniquely hers. Taking her time with the big decision, Addy ultimately picks a day that has meaning for her and indeed, the entire nation.

A Lovely Story
Addy, an escaped slave, makes a friend, and worries about segregation. When is Addy's birthday? What can she do about prejudice between blacks and whites? How can she make this birthday a happy one? And can her new friend help her? Find out in this lovely tale.

Mourt's Relation: A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth
Published in Paperback by Applewood Books (September, 1986)
Authors: William Bradford and Dwight B. Heath
Average review score:

The "American Dream" and Puritan Propaganda
In the colonial stage of America's discovery, Europeans' conception of America appeared to be positive because at this stage the subject was the exploration and settlement of America and that was why Europeans received exaggerating accounts of the New World and its manifold opportunities. The colonizers' tracts and the travelers' accounts exaggerated the romantic attractions of the New World. The vast and abundant resources of the New World were admired, in a propagandistic and persuasive discourse. Both the Puritans and the colonizers (which were often one and the same) wrote exaggerating accounts of their adventures to lure Europeans over to the New World. Mourt's Relation (1622) was written to persuade Europeans that life in Massachusetts was a venture in a plentiful land. The book overlooks the calamities of the first winter and overstates the rich resources of Massachusetts. Yet, it is an excellent read.

Excellent concise history as seen by those who made it
This is an excellent book. The unknown author ("Mourt") describes in detail the accounts of life during the settlement of the Pilgrims. "He" describes the account in a day-to-day style, accounting for making food, building houses, and encounters with the indigenous peoples. The Pilgrams' travels to find a home and the actual settling are fascinating and well described. I will never think of the Pilgrims or indigenous peoples the same way again. Overall, this book is very insightful.

The language is archaic, I feel I must warn you. But if you can get past that, and you like colonial history, you'll love this one. It will give you a much better idea about the Pilgrams, far beyond the over-dramatized and unrealistically happy Thanksgiving story.

Wonderful and Surprising
This delightful little book describes the first year of the Pilgrims in America. Written to make life in Massachusetts sound like an adventure in a bounteous land, the book ignores the extreme hardship of the first winter and instead focuses on the rich resources of Massachusetts and the relationship the Pilgrims developed with the Indians. Here, the book drives home two points: (1) Europeans had long come to North American to fish and trade. These activities left a mixed legacy that the pilgrims had to overcome. (2) The Indians were everywhere. In fact, the first trip by the Pilgrims to visit chief Massasoit was motivated in part by this fact: Indians families were coming in great numbers to Plymouth to look at the English and interact with them. This was keeping the English from focusing on their farming. A wonderful book!

Wilderness cookery

Out of date
The Air Force has changed greatly since this book was published. Good only for general information, look elsewhere for up-to-date and detailed infomation.

A very good book for anyone
This book has very good reading material for anyone, not just military people. Especially good reading on leadership and morality. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone. The military information in it is also very useful for new officer's.

Excellent resource for any USAF officer or officer candidate
The "Air Force Officer's Guide, 31st Edition" is an excellent resource for any USAF officer. Whether they be an officer candidate, newly appointed officer, or senior officer, there is something here for all. I have it in my library, on the reference bookshelf, within arm's reach anytime I am working at my computer station.

Very thorough review of the following subject areas:
PART ONE: THE PROFESION OF ARMS-
The professional officer, the code of service, leadership, responsibilities of command.

PART TWO: AIR FORCE ORGANIZATION-
DoD, Department of Air Force, and reserve components.

PART THREE: CAREER AND ADVANCEMENT-
Everything from training and development to fitness and promotability factors. Also, the evaluation system is "de-mystified."

PART FOUR: THE AIR FORCE WAY-
Customs and courtesies, uniforms and insignia, badges, decorations, service medals and ribbons, and a very timely section of social life in the Air Force. A good section of material related to "being the officer's spouse." Many of the common tactical errors made in social settings may be avoided by reviewing this section before attending a "Dining-In" or "Dining-Out."

PART FIVE: BENEFITS AND RESTRICTIONS-
Career, pay and personal allowances, leave, medical care, voluntary and involuntary seperations, seperation benefits.

PART SIX: PERSONAL AFFAIRS-
Legal documents and assistance, financial security for your family, overseas assignment matters

APPENDICES-
Appendix A: Initial active duty and follow-on.
Appendix B: Air University suggested professional reading guide.
Appendix C: USAF bases.
Appendix D: Selected air force publications.
Appendix E: Selected acronyms.
Index and a section of color plates os medals.

I have gone back to this book several times, and so will any other reader with ties to the United States Air Force. For the junior officer or the officer candidat!e in particular, this is a very inexpensive education in professional officership. Years of experience are contained in these 349 pages. One does not have to learn by graduating from the "University of Hard Knocks" if they apply what is contained in these pages.
